Here’s the quote from Dennis Prager of Prager U which I open up the podcast with:
“Good societies could survive people doing immoral things. But a good society cannot survive if it calls immoral things moral.”
Dennis uses the word ‘good’ to denote what I would imagine his belief is that most folks are inherintly good. That most people are in essence “good” people. But, what does Jesus have to say about the issue of being “good”?
When addressing the rich young ruler who approached Jesus and called Him “Good teacher”, Jesus’ response was perfect! He said in Mark 10:18:
“Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God.” (NKJV)
Now before anyone is tempted to say that Jesus was not calling Himself good, let me clear that up real quick—that’s exactly what He was calling Himself. Jesus was equating Himself to God. Essentially, the Lord was once again saying the quiet part out loud: Hey guys, I am God! Basically, Jesus was telling the rich young ruler that he (the rich young ruler) was correct in calling Him (Jesus) good, in that He’s the Only One that fits that description while no one else does.
Paul seconds that sentiment in Romans 3:10-12 as he is outlining the fact that ALL have sinned. And, the last time I checked, the word ‘ALL’ in the Greek means ‘ALL’! This is what he said:
“As it is written: “There is none righteous, no, not one; There is none who understands; There is none who seeks after God. They have all turned aside; They have together become unprofitable; There is none who does good, no, not one.”
What makes a society essentially ‘good’ is not humanities inherent goodness, but rather the presence of the Holy Spirit working through the life of the blood bought, born again individual. It is the Holy Spirit restraining the tides of evil from flooding every aspect of our socity—of our world.
But what happens when the influence of the Holy Spirit working through the life of the believer is hampered by indifference, affluence, cares of this world and apathy? Well, we get what I alluded to in the defintion of the saying “To Hell In A Handbasket”: We get situations or events that are going so disastrously wrong they're spiraling out of control.
I’ll leave you with words from God Himself found in Isaiah 5:20 as He describes and gives a reason (amongst many) for the impending judgment His People would soon face.
“Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; Who put darkness for light, and light for darkness; Who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!” (NKJV)
It would seem to me that we (the body of Christ) have allowed ‘a good society’ to call immoral things moral. Even worse, we’ve stood by and allowed them to practice such things as well. We’ve looked the other way because we were too busy making our “vats” (church buildings) bigger so that more “grain” (people) could fit in it no matter the cost. And we are reaping what we’ve sown.
So with that I part ways and bid you adieu!
