What is perseverance?
Perseverance “is the quality of continuing to try to achieve something despite difficulties, setbacks, or discouragement. It involves steadfastness and determination in pursuing goals, even when faced with challenges.”1 The Word of God encourages each of us to endure the challenges of life. For example James 1:12 says:
“Blessed [happy, spiritually prosperous, favored by God] is the man who is steadfast under trial and perseveres when tempted; for when he has passed the test and been approved, he will receive the [victor’s] crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.” (AMP
Also, in Romans 5:3-5, Paul shows us the hierarchy and chain reaction of spiritual development through persevering via life’s trials:
“3 And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance (or endurance); 4 and perseverance, (approved)character; and character, hope. 5 Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.” (NKJV)\
In scripture, perseverance is usually presented in such a way to show how faith is refined and our character is developed. James 1:2–4 says:
“2 My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. 4 But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.” (NKJV)
James is encouraging each of us that the testing of our faith produces perseverance, which leads to spiritual maturity and completeness. Being able to look at it through this perspective transforms the pain, suffering and hardship from a mere burden into an opportunity for massive spiritual growth.
God doesn’t allow trials by random chance or to be seen as misfortunes, but as purposeful experiences allowed by God to deepen our dependence on Him, shape our Christlike character, and prepare each of us for the good works He has planned for every single one of our lives—and Kelvin is a perfect example of that!

Kelvin embodies what it truly means to persevere and endure. His heart and love for the Lord are unmistakable. What amazes me most about Kelvin is his willingness to be used by God. His life serves as a powerful reminder that physical limitations do not—and should not—translate into spiritual limitations. In fact, the opposite is often true.
Let me explain: Though Kelvin lacks physical sight, he sees with spiritual eyes more clearly than most of us ever will. And while he cannot hear, his ability to listen to the Lord with spiritual ears far surpasses that of many.
We will all face trials and tribulations in this life—that’s a truth clearly spoken of in Scripture, even by our Lord Himself. How we respond to these challenges can either shape us or break us. Getting to know Kelvin and witnessing his heart to see people come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ has been a tremendous blessing and encouragement to me. It’s helped put things into perspective.
Don’t feel sorry for yourself. Trials are not signs that God has abandoned you; rather, they are evidence of His refining work in our lives. You are a treasure to the Lord, and He is ready to use you. We have no excuses—and that includes me!
